Hikers cautioned as presence of puff adders set to increase in winter

Hikers in the KZN Drakensberg have been asked to be extra cautious.
Emergency personnel have responded to two separate snakebite incidents in the region, in less than a week. Both involved puff adders.
A 38-year-old hiker was rushed to the ICU after he was bitten by the venomous snake in the southern Berg, this past weekend.
A 15-year-old boy was hospitalised, last week, after suffering a bite along Drakensberg Gardens road in the Underberg area.

Kate Dobmann who's with the Underberg Emergency Medical Services has urged people to be extra vigilant.
" make sure you are wearing proper hiking gear.
"Obviously takkies is fine but preferably ankle-high boots. Be vigilant, especially now going into winter where the snakes are actually coming out to the pathways to get the heat they require from the sunshine where it is all open."
