Higher Education women not safe: Manamela
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The Department of Higher Education and Training says it's worrying that the majority of women staff and students at institutions of higher learning say that they don't feel safe.
The department says in order to deal with cases of gender-based violence, varsity and college staff need to be well-trained.
Deputy Minister Buti Manamela has been speaking in Pretoria, where he introduced measures to increase safety and eradicate GBV at tertiary institutions.
"People who understand what these protocols are understand the legal implications, but beyond that the social implications - people who can relate to those who have been victimised."
Higher Health, an agency tasked with implementing GBV, mental health and other programmes in the higher education sector revealed that over 60% of students feel unsafe on campus
"I think nothing about this is not interconnected. Gender diversity has direct relation to gender-based violence. So we cannot lose that topic. We cannot talk about gender-based violence and not talk about gender equality. We must talk about the cause then the problem," CEO Ramneek Ahluwalia.
