Helping hand for Sydenham fire victims
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Residents living in Sydenham's Lacy Road informal settlement have started rebuilding their homes after a fire ripped through the area.
Almost 80 shacks were gutted and a girl injured on Friday.
Ward 31 councillor Charmaine Clayton, says they suspect an electric spark from a transformer could’ve started the blaze.
Clayton says families at Lacy Road have been begging for proper housing for years.
"The people have been waiting for low cost housing since 1992, and every year they are told next year, in the meanwhile almost 80 shacks were burnt down these people have no certificates and no IDs, they have nothing," she said.

She says neighbouring community members continue to lend a helping hand. More than 300 blankets were given.
"People have come with clothing and food parcels. I can not begin to tell you how the NGOs have rallied together."
About 400 people in the informal settlement are having to make do without electricity this weekend.
