Heavy police presence at KwaMashu hostel
KwaZulu-Natal detective units and other specialised units are still on the scene at a hostel in KwaMashu where five people were shot dead this morning.
This is the second shooting incident in Durban today bringing to eight the number of people killed in the city this morning.
The police's Jay Naicker says an unknown group of men entered the hostel north of Durban at about 7am and opened fire on the occupants of one of the rooms.
Another man has been left critically injured.
''Three of the occupants in the room died instantly and one died whilst receiving medical attention. A fifth victim is in a critical condition in hospital.
''When police arrived on the scene they found a body of an unknown man lying outside the block at the hostel. A 9mm pistol was found next to his body.
''At this stage we suspect that he could have been one of the attackers and was killed by unknown persons as he fled the scene,'' he said.
About an hour earlier, three other people were shot dead when suspects opened fire on them with automatic weapons at the Brook Street taxi rank in the Durban CBD.
