Health workers union threatens to down tools again
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
A union representing some of the province's health workers has threatened to strike again if their grievances are not addressed.
Forensic pathologists at two state mortuaries went on strike earlier this year, calling for a danger allowance and a review of their salaries.
The work stoppage led to a backlog of cases which saw Health MEC, Sbongiseni Dhlomo stepping in to personally conduct autopsies.
Workers including emergency medical staff marched to Durban City Hall yesterday, calling on the CCMA to scrap an agreement between KZN Health and a number of other unions including HOSPERSA, and the PSA.

Sfiso Dhlamini, who is with the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers, says the deal does not include a danger allowance.
He says they have been calling for this for 10 years.
"The MEC is prepared to resolve all the matters that are within the memorandum. While we were waiting for the MEC to respond, the unions came with an agreement which was favouring the employer. We cannot blame the MEC, that is why our blame is going straight to the unions. We are asking unions how they've come up with this agreement. This is why we're taking to the streets and the CCMA against the union," he said.
