The message comes after the tragic discovery of the bodies of a Greenwood Park couple and their friend, who're believed to have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The area's been without power since last Thursday, apparently due to cable theft. Health expert Angelique Coetzee explained what carbon monoxide is.

"Your portable backup generators produce a very poisonous gas, carbon monoxide. It’s important to note that it is odourless, it’s colourless, and it kills without any warning."

She says if you're using a generator, it shouldn't be kept indoors.

"Even if your windows are open, you should not let it run too close to a living space because it’s not only from monoxide poisoning, but you can get burn injuries resulting from being in contact with a hot generator. When you use your generator, it needs to be at least 20 feet or more away from your living space."
