Health, Education gets biggest cut of KZN budget

Finance MEC, Ravigasen Pillay says it was a priority to give KZN's Health and Education Departments the biggest pieces of the pie.

He delivered his maiden budget speech at the Provincial Legislature yesterday.  Pillay says these departments deal directly with people's livelihoods.  

Out of KZN's R130-billion budget, education was allocated R54-billion and health R45-billion.   

Pillay says the Education Department will use funds to cover the costs of no-fee schools, nutrition and sanitary programs.

He says they want to expand ICTs in the public healthcare sector.

"This budget provides health services to the uninsured population of KwaZulu-Natal. The department plans to improve information communication technology with broadband connectivity and plan on conducting R3 074 435 to reduce the malaria case maturity rate."
