Hawks take over data leak investigation
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
The Hawks say they will be zeroing in on the cyber attackers responsible for a massive data leak.
A web security expert in Australia revealed this week that the IDs, salary information and personal addresses of more than R30-million South Africans have been exposed.
The crime fighting unit's Hangwani Mulaudzi says at this stage they are looking into how much information was leaked.
"We have tasked our cyber crime team to look into this matter - looking at both people inside and outside of the country. What's critical is for us to make sure we find those who are responsible," he says.

Meanwhile Home Affairs and the State Security Agency are conducting their own investigation.
The leak appears to have been traced to a property company which may have received the data from credit bureaus.
