The Hawks, the State Security Agency of South Africa and Home Affairs Department say they are probing the leak of the personal data of at least 30 million South Africans.
This after Australian web security expert, Troy Hunt revealed on Twitter that the personal information of millions of South Africans - including their ID numbers - had been leaked online.
But various reports from local experts indicate that the salary details and residential information has also been leaked through the cyber attack.
It's alleged that the leak has been traced to a property company which may have received the data from credit bureaus.

State Security Agency, Spokesperson Brian Dube says they are concerned as to how did this happened and who is behind the attack.
"The State Security Agency has noted the leak of personal information that appears to be private information. It's a matter of serious concern to us. That's why we have taken an urgent look into the information to ensure we find those who are involved in this leak and establish how it happened," he says.
