Spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says Wednesday’s bust follows investigations that started in November after a tip-off.

“It is alleged that in November last year, a copper manufacturing company, P&P Commodities in the Randfontein area, was operating and melting copper without any of the second-hand goods permit, foundry license, combustion license or any other environmental permit or license.”

Mulamu says at that time, the business was successfully closed down and copper operations were halted pending their approval for any valid environmental permit.

However, Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Krugersdorp subsequently learnt that it was back in business.

“A multi-disciplinary operation was conducted on Monday, by the Hawks, and various other law enforcement groups, where they pounced on the suspect, Vernon Michael van der Mescht, allegedly loading copper blisters into a truck for distribution in the KwaZulu-Natal province,” says Mulamu.

The Randfontein Regional court granted 56-year-old Mescht bail of R5 000 on Tuesday.

According to Mulamu the investigation team confiscated 42 copper blisters worth approximately R4.6 million.

The case was postponed to 16 March for further investigation while outstanding suspects are being sought.
