Gungubele: Over 600 Post Office branches to be saved
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies says the ongoing business rescue process at the South African Post Office will lead to the preservation of just over 600 branches.
Minister Mondli Gungubele indicated that 235 post offices will be closed countrywide.
So far, 4,700 retrenchment letters have been issued to employees.
In January, the Congress of South African Trade Unions called on Parliament to intervene amid looming 40% salary cuts for Post Office employees.

Gungubele said on Thursday that the business rescue practitioners have requested additional government funding for retrenchment packages.
“We have been able to save the post office, it’s on a course towards salvation to become solvent. In this instance, we accept that we didn’t properly run the post office and that’s the reason we find ourselves in this situation.”
