The men accused of hacking five people to death lined up in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Members of the Gumede family, including the three children, were found dead at a house in Mgodini last week.
One of the accused, Siphesihle Xulu, abandoned his bail application during Monday’s court appearance.
The second accused, Philani Shezi, is set to apply for bail early next month.
Police say both suspects were known to the family.
"Police took in two persons for questioning, and after further investigations, the two suspects were formally charged,” says KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
