Growing demand for water in KZN rural communities: Umgeni Water
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Umgeni Water say rural-urban migration in KwaZulu-Natal along with the growing number of homes in rural areas are putting further strain on the local water supply.
The utility's Thami Hlongwa has been speaking at a water summit at the Durban ICC.
He says 40% of consumed water becomes waste water and more and more people are moving to cities for opportunities.
This means that more people need to be accommodated.
Hlongwa says while they welcome the construction of decent developments in rural areas - like KwaMaphumulo - these often come at a cost to the municipality.
