Growing concern over Umhlanga promenade sewage leaks
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Umhlanga residents and businesses are demanding that the area's sewerage infrastructure be upgraded urgently.
This after crews were called out to the Umhlanga promenade yesterday to repair another burst pipe.
eThekwini Ward 35 councillor, Heinz de Boer says the sewerage leaked over the walkway and onto the beach - not far from the lighthouse.
"We've counted possibly about ten major sewage leaks that have happened probably in the last six months or so which is really concerning considering the status of Umhlanga - particularly the promenade - which the city has put a lot of work into. At the same time - it's a prime tourist destination. Local people and international tourists don't want to walk across raw sewage that flows across the promenade," he said.

The Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct posted an update yesterday saying the leak had been reported to the municipality, and that eThekwini technicians had completed the necessary repairs.
