The country's largest importer, wholesaler and retailer of firearms and ammunition, Outdoor investment holdings, has welcomed government's decision to hold back the Firearms Control Amendment Bill.
The agenda to amend this bill was before parliament on Wednesday.
The amendment of the bill would have seen sections 13 and 14 deleted which would have made it illegal to possess a firearm for self-defence.
CEO of the company, Marco Van Niekerk, says the police minister should withdraw this bill in its entirety.
"This is an extremely dangerous piece of legislation. It will make private security powerless to fight crime it will also seriously impact the hunting industry that sustains 176 000 jobs in a society that already suffers close to 40 percent unemployment rate.
“This is unacceptable, especially now when violent crime is out of control.
"The SAPS have shown South Africans that they are under capacitated and unable to safe citizens and property, making everyone completely reliant on SAPS for security with no other way to protect themselves, will see murder, rape, robbery and violent unrest skyrocket."
