Govt shifts focus to water pollution ahead of Mandela Day

Water officials are strengthening their campaign to reduce pollution in rivers, streams, and wetlands in and around communities.

The Department of Water and Sanitation says it’s shifting the focus of its clear rivers campaign to good health and infrastructure preservation.
Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says their work this year will tie in with 67 minutes of giving back on Nelson Mandela Day.

He says what many people don’t realise is that heavily polluted water bodies also put a strain on municipal sewerages and other infrastructure.
"The impact on the infrastructure itself is that there is then less stress ion the infrastructure.
"There is less that the infrastructure has to deal with in terms of removing solids out of the water and therefore implying that there would be longer life of the infrastructure that would have otherwise been negatively impacted on by pollution in the water."
