Govt serious about phasing-in electric vehicles, says group
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The government's recent announcement detailing its efforts to introduce electric vehicles proves it's serious about change.
That’s according to the country's network of renewable energy charging stations.
The Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel last week released the white paper on EVs.
The plan aims to phase out combustion engine cars in South Africa and shift to new technology vehicles, which include batteries and hybrids.
Zero Carbon Charge's Andries Malherbe says he's pleased about the move.
But he says the government needs to focus more on renewable energy.
"We believe the white paper is focused on capacitating and greening existing grip. Instead, the focus should be on developing off-grid EV charging stations based on renewable energy sources such as solar parks."
