The brothers appeared at the Durban High Court on Friday.

The pair were captured on CCTV footage during the unrest two years ago, assaulting 19-year-old Mondli Majola in Phoenix.

It was revealed in a postmortem that Majola died of a stab wound.

The brothers were found not guilty of his murder earlier this year.

They were found guilty of attempted murder, assault GBH where they were given three years, as well as common assault, which was given 12 months.

Natasha Kara from the National Prosecuting Authority says the court ruled that the charges will run concurrently.

"Resulting in an effective sentence of seven years imprisonment. The court also deemed them unfit to possess a firearm."

Nombuso Majola, the mother of the victim, says the verdict wasn't what she expected, but justice has been served.

"For the fact that this day has finally come, and they have been given a sentence that makes my heart a bit at ease even though it was not what I was looking for in terms of the sentence. I expected them to get something higher because of what they have done to me and my family... but I am happy that we did get something."
