Sentencing delay for Phoenix brothers involved in 2021 riots

There's been a delay in the sentencing proceedings of Durban brothers, Dylan and Ned Govender.
It comes months after they were acquitted on charges of murder, for the death of 19-year-old Mondli Majola in Phoenix during the 2021 July unrest.
They were instead convicted of assaulting Majola during the looting, public violence and amid racial tensions in the area.
They were also further convicted of assaulting Nkululeko Mangwe, and the attempted murder of Mxolisi Putuzo.
In their last appearance, the state asked for a postponement in the case due to outstanding reports.
KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said they appeared in the Durban High Court on Friday.
"Documents such as a social workers report, a victim impact statement and a psychologist report were put before the court. The presiding officer advised that he would need time to go through the documentation as well as the evidence that was led before handing down a sentence," said Kara.
The duo will be back in the dock in the next two weeks.
"It is for this reason that the matter was adjourned to the 18th of August 2023 and the accused were released out on bail as they were previously out on bail," she said.
