A hostel dwellers
organisation in Durban says the deadly shootings recently at Glebelands Hostel
in uMlazi are a cry for urgent police intervention.

Eight people were killed last weekend and a man was gunned down there a few days later.
Ubuye bamaHostela says dwellers are deeply concerned about the spike in criminal activity in the area saying they don't feel safe.
Vusani Zweni is the chairperson of UBH, which is a community-based group that represents residents living in Durban's ten hostels.

“Some of the contributing factors that have led to the increase of crime at the hostel are the abuse of alcohol, and drugs, and the non-closure of taverns, especially in hostels that have no community leader structures.
“This is a major concern because we do not have the powers to tackle the rising lawlessness. We need government and law enforcement to help stabilise our hostels and make arrests.”
