Gigaba details future plans for Home Affairs dept

Returning Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has told staff they must be ready to tackle fraud and corruption in the department.

Gigaba reported to his old office for the first time today since the Cabinet reshuffle earlier this week. 

Gigaba previously served as Finance Minister - delivering his final budget speech in February. 

He says it's not just corruption from within the department that needs to be eradicated.

"It's corruption and fraud emanating from outside the department is combated and that we cut the link between the officials and members of the public hell bent on engaging on corruption, that relationship between the corrupter and corruptee," he said. 

Gigaba also made it clear that Home Affairs officials must improve how they handle people's queries.

He says there is a backlog in responded to the public regarding numerous queries and this should be dealt with.

"People just need information. We have to be able to respond to those things. I know that for some people it's irritating to have to respond to these issues. It's what we have to do," Gigaba said.  

Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Fatima Chohan says the Border Management Authority Bill needs to be speedily passed and signed into law to secure our borders.

"Simply because our borders are too porous - making our country and our people vulnerable both to criminality, acts of terrorism and the drain of our resources due to illegal migration. into our country. These are priorities for us," Chohan said.
