Gcaleka's appointment as Public Protector will come with 'political baggage'

A legal NPO says Kholeka Gcaleka's appointment as the next
Public Protector would be good for continuity at the Chapter 9 institution.

But Accountability Now admits she's bound to come under heavy criticism over the Phala Phala matter.
A parliamentary committee tasked with finding the institution's next head on Tuesday recommended the advocate for the job.
The committee interviewed eight candidates last week.

Gcaleka's been acting as Public Protector since Busisiwe Mkhwebane's suspension.
Accountability Now's Paul Hoffman says she might be labelled a deployed cadre of (the ANC's) Luthuli House after she cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the Phala Phala saga.
"One must bear in mind that whoever is appointed as Public Protector in October may or may not serve out their term of office as a Public Protector in a coalition or a new government situation.
"Because of the political baggage that she carries with her, I would've preferred one of the other candidates over her in spite of her experience in the positions."
