Committee recommends Gcaleka as new public protector
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
A name has been put forward as the preferred candidate for public protector.
The parliamentary ad hoc committee tasked with finding the office-bearer has endorsed Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka.
She's been acting in the position since Busisiwe Mkhwebane's suspension.
Eight candidates were interviewed by the committee last week.
The ANC supported Gcaleka’s nomination, while the DA and EFF opposed her possible appointment.
Her name will now be sent to the National Assembly for a vote.

The ANC’s Richard Dyantyi told the committee the party believes her interview proved she is fit to hold office.
"Advocate Gcaleka demonstrated that she has both the character and the capability for that office - throughout that interview, she demonstrated that beyond any doubt from where I am sitting.
"I was amazed that in three-and-a-half years being a deputy, the level of readiness that there you have a young woman, and she performed beyond all of her peers who were here."
Gcaleka recently hit the headlines when her report on the Phala Phala robbery cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of any wrongdoing.
