The Road Traffic Inspectorate's Zinhle Mali says maintenance teams were still making their way to the area on Wednesday morning.
The route between Underberg and Boston remained closed.
"The R617 towards Kokstad is closed due to snow. The road closed an hour ago. We urge motorists to kindly delay their trips between these two areas,” says Mali.

"The snow is not safe for motorists, that's the reason why the road has been closed. There are no other road closures in the province due to snow. However, we are monitoring all the areas like Ladysmith and Harrismith."

There has been snowfall in the southern Drakensberg, which forecasters say will continue on Wednesday.
Traffic, meanwhile, was also diverted in Cedara after a truck overturned on Tuesday evening.
Mali says the road was still closed on Wednesday morning.
"We do have lane closures at Cedara for the recovery of the gas container. The lane closure is between Merrivale and Cedara. The other lane closure is between Cato Ridge and Camperdown on the southbound."
