Fuel increase on the cards in September

Motorists can expect to pay more at the pumps from September. An economist says the Rand has failed to gain enough strength to soften the blow of international oil prices.

Economist, Dawie Roodt believes petrol could go up by around 25 cents a litre next week.

"The main reason for that is the recent weakness in the exchange rate of the rand. Another increase in the petrol price is likely to put even further upward pressure. Eventually the Reserve Bank will be forced to make increases again," Roodt said.

Meanwhile, government says it is still looking at ways to mitigate the impact of higher fuel price increases on poor households. Deputy President David Mabuza was in Parliament yesterday - answering MPs questions.

"The price of oil and fuel fluctuate and it affects us. Remember, when that price of oil goes up, it goes to say that the price of transport, food, and everything will go up. This will be triggered by the oil price and the fuel price. It's a matter that we are looking into," Mabuza said
