KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Mbali Frazer says she is not unduly concerned about the number of matrics caught cheating during the final exams in the province.

Exam quality assurance body Umalusi said on Monday that 80% of the cases it picked up nationally were found in KZN.

Frazer says the KZN numbers aren't necessarily shocking.

"KZN is having 190,000 learners who wrote their exams, meaning whatever number we have in KZN is going to be up,” said Frazer.

“The criteria that they are using is the one that gave them that number, but if you go there, you will find that it is about 14 schools. It’s only when you speak about group copying they will then count each and every learner as a case."

Frazer says officials in the province are the ones who flagged the issues.  She says the copying cases won't compromise the quality and integrity of the matric results:

“It is us who gave them a report. Some of the things that were reported were found by us in our marking centres. What we are happy about is that whatever we are going to get is something that is cleaned."

The National Senior Certificate results will be released on Friday.
