In the south coast case, a passerby stumbled upon the badly decomposed body earlier Tuesday afternoon in Mthwalume.

"An inquest docket had been opened for investigation, and the circumstances surrounding the incident is still under investigation.

"We cannot confirm how long the body was there, but we can confirm that it is severely decomposed," says police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele.

This is the fourth body discovered in the sugarcane fields in the area in as many months.

In April, the bodies of two siblings aged 16 and 25 were found by hunters after they went missing in March.

Another woman was found stabbed to death in the same area two months ago.

Last month, the Democratic Alliance called the police minister to put together a task team to investigate the possibility a serial killer has gone on the rampage.

Police say they can't yet confirm whether the same killer is responsible.

In KwaDukuza, there's a manhunt for five gunmen following last night's shooting.

It's understood that a 17-year-old and 25-year-old man were seated in a car at a sports ground in Lindelani when they were shot.

Police say they died instantly and that the motive is being investigated.
