Four women killed in 9-vehicle crash near Mariannhill Toll Plaza

Four women were killed in the crash on Tuesday morning.  

Newswatch understands that three trucks and six cars were involved in the collision. 

Medi Response spokesperson Paul Herbst says one vehicle was crushed under a truck.

"Search and rescue teams are currently extricating four people that have succumbed to their injuries in one of the vehicles. An additional three people have sustained moderate to serious injuries. 

"The road currently is closed for any motorists coming down from the Mariannhill side."   

The scene is still active and motorists are being asked to avoid the area for now.
