Four suspects killed in Verulam shootout

Four suspected criminals have been killed and two others have been injured, in a dramatic shootout with police officers at Canelands - in Verulam, north of Durban - this afternoon.
According to police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, the officers had received information about a gang that was en route to commit a robbery in the Canelands area and the vehicle they were travelling in - a Gold Hyundai i20 - was spotted on the R102.
“Our officers tried to intercept the vehicle but it sped off, with the occupants firing shots towards them,” she says, “During the subsequent exchange of gunfire, four of the suspects were fatally wounded and another two of them were injured. They were taken to hospital under police guard”.

Gwala says three unlicensed firearms were recovered and that they will be sent for ballistics testing, to ascertain whether they might have been used in the commission of any other crimes.
In the meantime, Gwala says, it has been established that the vehicle the suspects were using was stolen from Sydenham last month.
