Four murder suspects have been killed in a shootout with police on the M4 southern freeway, in Umlazi.

Durban police tracked them down at a local mall on Tuesday night, after they received a tip-off about the gang's whereabouts.

"The suspects fired shots towards the police and to protect themselves and other road users, police returned fire. During the shootout, four suspects were shot and fatally wounded."
