Four killed in north coast crash
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
Four people have died in a high-impact, head-on collision on the N2, near Mtunzini, this afternoon.
Paramedics from different emergency services attended the scene.
IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says the driver of one of the vehicles had become entrapped in his vehicle, which then caught alight and that he burnt to death.
"Three occupants from the second vehicle sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead by paramedics, shortly after their arrival," he says.
An additional three people sustained serious injuries and were trapped in the wreckage.
Herbst says they had to use the jaws of life to free them, while the IPSS Aeromedical Service and the KZN Heath Department's Air ambulance were dispatched.
Paramedics from IPSS, the KZN Department of Health and KwaZulu Private worked together to stabilise the injured, before airlifting them to hospital.
