Former KZN Treasury head handed 15-year sentence for corruption

Former head of the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury Dumisani Shabalala has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for fraud and corruption.
Shabalala was convicted in June.
He is said to have received a R1.5 million kickback from Intaka Investments for helping the company secure a R44 million water purification plant contract.
Shabalala was the chairperson of the procurement committee at the time.
The National Prosecution Authority says between 2004 and 2007 he formed a relationship with his co-accused Gaston Savoi, and even travelled to Brazil to view the equipment.

KZN NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara says Shabalala was sentenced on Thursday in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
"Shabalala was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for fraud, 15 years imprisonment for corruption, 10 years imprisonment for money laundering and five years imprisonment for contravening the PFMA.
"The sentences will run concurrently. His bail was extended to 13 September 2022 when the court will hear his application for leave to appeal."
