"We don't know what is our future because even if you run away from the hostel to your family, you are being followed and shot," the resident says.

The witness says hitmen who live there - are ANC members.

The resident, who was also part of the Peace Committee, was called to testify at the inquiry into political killings yesterday.

Speaking through a translator, he says he left the hostel after he'd heard there'd been a hit on his life.

He says members of the peace committee, who were from the ruling party, were also threatened.

"There has been no convictions. About 90 people have been killed so we don't feel safe. If there are convictions, other people will be afraid," he says.

He also corroborated testimony from human rights activist - Vanessa Burger - that the hostel is haven for hitmen, who commit murders across the province.

He says residents are threatened to each pay R50 - adding that they were initially told that the money was for their protection.

"The money that was collected was meant to buy bullets and replenish firearms. If someone has been arrested - it would be used to pay police officers to free that person but you wouldn't know or be told how that would happen," he says.
