Flood damage in eThekwini estimated at R1.4bn

eThekwini Municipality will need an estimated R1.4 billion to cover the costs of the damage to municipal infrastructure following the recent heavy rains.
The city manager has tabled a damage assessment report.
It says there's been substantial damage caused to 341 dwellings and public facilities.
The report also outlines the estimated rehabilitation costs and response measures and interventions the city needs to implement.

City manager Musa Mbele presented it to the executive committee.
"The restoration cost is anticipated to be R1.4 billion and will include a variety of projects such as human settlements, water infrastructure and sanitation. The municipality has already guaranteed that critical infrastructure repairs begin as soon as possible, employing available resources."
“Electricity and water operations are being handled within the existing budget, and the submission to provincial disaster management is being made for disaster categorisation under the Disaster Management Act."
