KZN police are searching for a man who fled the
police in Ballito by jumping into the ocean.
Officers were conducting a routine checks on Compensation Road this past weekend when they were informed that a man, who spotted them, darted from his car and ran towards the beach.
The man, believed to be a foreign national, was spotted entering the water and was later seen clinging onto rocks.
Medi Response rescue swimmers tried to rescue him.
“The Medi Response search and rescue team entered the water in a bid to bring the man to shore. The man was holding onto a rock and refused to return,” says spokesperson Paul Herbst.

The man is evidently a strong swimmer as he was seemingly capable in his attempts. Equally, he was aggressive in warding off his would-be rescuers with attempts made to push and hold of one of the rescuers underwater.
The man proceeded to swim approximately 500m in a southern direction towards Zimbali. Ultimately, rescue swimmers abandoned their efforts to coax the man to shore, owing to safety concerns.
The incident was left in the charge of police.
