Five killed, police officer wounded in Hilton shooting
Five people have been killed in a shooting incident in Hilton outside Pietermaritzburg this morning.

Emergency services found the bodies of five people lying in a veld next to the road after being called to the scene at about 2am.
ER24's Werner Vermaak says the men were declared dead on scene.

Initial reports are that the men had been killed in a shootout with police. Vermaak says an officer also suffered a gunshot wound to the face.
"The paramedics were informed by the police that he was rushed through to the Hilton Hospital, by his colleagues, for further medical care. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known but we do understand that the incident has been going on for some time and ended at the Hilton area," he said.
