Transport officials had confirmed that five people were killed when more than 30 vehicles collided on the N3 between Hilton and Cedara, leading to the complete road closure.

It's understood that five trucks, eight minibus taxis and 22 cars were involved.

During the hours-long traffic chaos, the Durban-bound side was also closed for recovery efforts, and vehicles were diverted.

The KZN Department of Transport's Kwanele Ncalane says emergency teams remained on the scene until late into the night to monitor the situation and reopen the route.

"We are calling on motorists to work with the authorities and we also extend, on the behalf of the MEC of Transport, our deepest condolences to the families who are affected.

"We are calling on everyone who is on our road to adhere to traffic regulations and to adjust their driving habits."

He says the cause of the mass crash is not yet known.

Many holidaymakers to KZN were heading out of the province on Monday. Responding to the tragedy the uMngeni Municipality made the Hilton Town Hall available to motorists on the N3 who needed a place to stay or rest.

"Hot meals, blankets and matteresses will be provided as well as any other assistance required by those who need to leave the freeway or need help," Mayor Chris Pappas said in a message last night.
