Five bogus doctors arrested between April, June
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Health Professions Council of South Africa’s CEO, Dr Magome Masike, says efforts to root out bogus doctors are paying off.
"From April up to June this year, we arrested five of them, and in the year 2022/23, 33 were arrested."
Masike says between 2020 and 2022, they flushed out 89 fake doctors in the country.
He reacted to police arresting a man not registered as a doctor running a medical facility illegally in Pietermaritzburg.

He's said to have been supplying and selling prescription medicine with a high scheduling status, like pain tablets, antidepressants, and sleeping pills to patients.
Masike says it is a significant problem.
"It is a problem in the country, and in protecting our communities, we have to go out there and arrest people."
