Fit SA concerned over Level 2 limitation for gyms and fitness centres
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
With gyms and fitness clubs allowed to reopen on Tuesday, association Fit SA says it's going to be an uphill battle for many establishments that couldn't afford to pay staff during the lockdown.
It's been a tough five-month wait for the fitness industry, which had to shut its doors due to the pandemic.
Association of health and fitness clubs, Fit SA, says it's excited to welcome back members, even though they'll be limited to 50 people.
"I think that the opening of gyms has come in just in time, because our fear was that if it went past September, a lot of people would have just said they'll come back and join next year.
"That would have been devastating. We estimated that up to 50% of the industry would have been wiped out had we not been able to open."

He says limitations on the maximum number of people does not make sense.
"You could have a gym that is 50 square metres, that means one person per square metre, and you could have a gym that is 5 000 square metres, so that is one person per 100 square metres.
"So that could be a contentious issue that will be a bit more of a problem for the bigger operators with bigger databases."
Meanwhile, Fit SA's court case against the ban on gyms will continue to be heard in court on Wednesday.
