Virgin Active and Planet Fitness won't be opening their gyms yet, nearly five months after closing their doors due to COVID-19.

On Monday, Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that fitness centres and gyms are allowed to open under level 2 of the lockdown regulations.

The opening of gyms would be subject to a limit of 50 persons or less as well as other health precautions.

Virgin Active spokesperson Carla White says they need to submit their COVID-19 plans to the government for approval before reopening.

"While gyms and fitness centres have been given the green light to re-open in level 2, we are still waiting for approval from government on our COVID operational procedures and protocols, and what conditions will apply to use.

"We expect their review of our plan to take approximately a week, following which we will announce our opening date."

Planet Fitness said on its social media pages that it is still working on opening its gyms in line with the health regulations.

"Fitness Family, Although we are not opening on Tuesday, the wait is almost over. Our teams are working around the clock to prepare the clubs to ensure that you are safe when you return. We will announce our opening date really soon."
