Officials
are in the process of establishing the cause of a fire that damaged over 100
homes at an informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg.
The blaze ripped through the area in the early hours of Friday morning.
Seventy-seven shacks were completely destroyed.
Celma Clarice, who works for uMsunduzi Municipality's Disaster Management, says they suspect that the fire could have been a result of a candle or illegal connection.
"There were three children that sustained burn injuries. They were rushed to hospital. Two of the children have been discharged. One still remains in hospital."

Clarice says arrangements to provide relief for victims have begun.
"I have received the interim report for beneficiaries. The next step is to capture it, and then it gets given to SASSA (South Africa Social Security Agency). SASSA will then issue those affected with vouchers, and they will also engage with the Social Development Department and Home Affairs."
