A popular eatery was fined R3000 for violating several food laws - including a lack of gloves and other protection for chefs when preparing food, using expired food items, and a rat problem.

The department's Bongani Tembe says they'll probe other venues in the city and apply the law where necessary.
"Our inspections are continuing. We will move to other towns because we want to make sure that all businesses comply with the Consumer Act. Among other things, we check whether shops don't sell expired food," he says.
