Fiery N2 crash kills 3 in Mtunzini

KZN medics have shared details of a horrific crash, that claimed the lives of three people, near Mtunzini off-ramp, on the north coast.

IPSS Medical Rescue says reports from the scene are that a car caught alight, after a rear-end collision involving two vehicles. 


Spokesperson Paul Herbst says all three victims were travelling together on the N2, late last night.


He says, "Three persons were entrapped in one of the two vehicles. All three succumbed to their injuries. The Jaws of Life were used to free their trapped bodies from the wreckage. The driver of the second vehicle had absconded."


There were other tragic collisions in KZN over the long Easter weekend.

A multiple-vehicle crash occurred on the N3 before Hammarsdale last night. 


Netcare 911's Shawn Herbst says around 20 people were hurt. 


He says, "Reports indicate that some of the people were ejected from the vehicles. Sadly two people had died. Three people had sustained critical injuries and around five people had sustained moderate injuries." 


"All the people were treated on scene and transported by multiple ambulance services through to the hospital."

A motorcyclist and his passenger were also killed in another crash in Pietermaritzburg. 


They were involved in a head-on collision with a bakkie on Mhlabunzima Road yesterday afternoon. 


Herbst says the man died on the scene while the woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital. 


Transport MEC Peggy Nkonyeni is expected to release the province's Easter road fatalities later today.


Meanwhile, the Easter long weekend is wrapping up and traffic on the roads is expected to pick up again today as holidaymakers and worshippers travel back home. 


The N3 Toll Concession says it is anticipating around 3 500 vehicles per hour towards Johannesburg during peak hours. 


Spokesperson Thania Dhoogra is advising travellers to exercise extra caution.


She says, "This may result in slow-moving traffic and congestion along the route. All lanes are open to traffic. 


"Road users are advised to please obey all traffic signs and law enforcement officials who are highly visible along the entirety of the route. Random checks are being conducted to ensure vehicle roadworthiness, driver fitness and COVID-19 compliance."
