Resident Nomusa Gumede says most people who rely on piece jobs - have been unemployed and are struggling to put food on the table.
"In our community, we are in a deep need of food during this lockdown," says Gumede.
Another local, Annette Ponen who's been running a feeding scheme in the area since last year says she couldn't turn a blind eye to hungry families.
She's been feeding more than 200 people every day, since the beginning of lockdown.
Ponen says she's been working with a group of women to supply children with face masks.
"Because of the coronavirus, the kids were coming to my door and telling me that they don't have food, they drank water last night before bed. Some of them said they ate sugar cane so that motivated me to feed them every day."
