FEDHASA: Water interruptions affecting businesses, livelihoods

The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (Fedhasa) says the catastrophic water interruptions in the northern parts of Durban have dealt another blow to businesses in the area.

Water levels at several Joburg reservoirs remain ‘critically low’

Over the past seven days, some residents and businesses, including hotels and restaurants, have had little to no water due to some reservoirs' incapability of producing the resource.

On Saturday, the City said its technical team had found that one of the pipelines on the Northern Aqueduct had been tampered with, while another had been vandalised.

Officials said a criminal case was opened at Greenwood Police Station.

After a meeting with the Umgeni-Uthukela Water Board, it was decided a reservoir changeover would be done to help get supply to the affected areas.

Fedhasa's Brett Tungay says the municipality needs to deal with these issues and other problems that are impacting businesses:

"Sanitation and waste is a huge problem in Durban and also other municipalities around the province, which is not ideal for anybody. This is affecting livelihoods and businesses."
