The agricultural union says the dire state of the country's roads is impacting food security.

The union's Kulani Siweya says many farmers have resorted to spending their money to fix roads as they struggle to get produce to markets.

Siweya says it's the government's responsibility, not the farmers'.

"Already farmers are having to contend with high-interest costs, load shedding and now over and above that farmers are going to an attend where they are spending about R200 000 per farmer to get the roads to a good condition in order for them to use it.

"It does have a dire impact on their bottom line, but also, let's say there is a situation where the farmers in that community are unable to fix those particular roads.

"What this means is that we will find goods either reaching the market in a poor state or they will not be able to get those goods to the market."
