"Many families depended on him. We as a church we depend on him, as friends we depended on him and what happened to him was absolutely tragic," says Nelson's friend, David Swartz.

"Because this was nothing more than murder and it's one too many of these that are happening. We are losing good people.

"This lawlessness is running rampant and maybe this is just a sign for us to wake up, for us as a community that's going to stand together because we are going to seek justice for this."

It is believed pastor Marlon Nelson of the Bluff was travelling on the N2 with his wife to fetch his daughter from work when a large boulder crashed into their car.

The vehicle flipped a few times before it landed on the opposite side of the highway.

Swartz rushed to the scene when he received a call from Nelson's wife pleading for help.

Swartz says the pastor was a community leader who ran feeding scheme, especially during the height of Covid-19, feeding thousands of families.

"He was instrumental in the community."

"It's absolutely heart ripping to lose somebody like him because we sang in the groups together. We were basically on a day-to-day basis together, his family our family - close as families. There's just too much memories built up so its raw.

Last month, a woman nearly met the same fate when a metal ball smashed through her windscreen while travelling on the M4.

The Wentworth Crime Prevention Forum says attacks on motorists appear to be on the rise in some areas.
