Moerane Commission: Sanco says witnesses' safety a concern
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
The Moerane Commission of Inquiry has been criticised for televising the testimonies of witnesses on live TV.
The South African National Civic Organisation says this could put the lives of witnesses at risk.
Sanco's Richard Mkhungo has also questioned why witnesses are not given protection after their testimony is heard.
"We have a problem with the processes. Why is it televised in the first place? We feel strongly as Sanco as it is dangerous to witnesses. Some may use the space to kill those they want to kill," he says.

The commission's Solo Mdledle says witnesses are given the choice to testify in private - without the media.
"The nature of the proceedings is that they are public hearings. People who are witnesses in the Commission say things on behalf of the rest of the community. The witnesses have a choice whether they want to testify on camera or in public," he says.
Sanco is expected to testify at the commission - probing political violence in KZN - when hearings resume later this month.
