Family relieved after Durban motorist escapes petrol bomb attack

The family of a motorist whose car was petrol-bombed in Durban this morning says he is still in a state of shock.

Mohamed Asmal had dropped his wife off at the airport and had been driving back home when he came across a protest on Bisasar Road in Clare Hills.
His brother-in-law, Ahmed Hansa says some of the protesters surrounded his car.
"The mob basically surrounded the vehicle and started throwing petrol bombs on it and set the car alight while he was in the vehicle," Hansa said.
Earlier, Durban Metro Police said Asmal managed to get out of his car before it was engulfed by flames.
It is understood the protesters were from a nearby informal settlement. Hansa says they are grateful his brother-in-law was able to escape with his life.
"He started to run away from the vehicle. Somebody threw a rock at him and injured him. He managed to get to the electricity department just down the road, to a place of safety," he said.
Police say they are investigating.
