The elderly women's relative Sibongile Ngubane says she was told of the attack over the phone.

"I received a call at night telling me both of their homes were on fire. We got out and went to the  house to find that she had already passed on and the three children had been rushed to the hospital. We then went to the second home and found the house had been burnt to the ground with all of them inside," she said.

The only survivor of the attack,  a 2-year-old, is recovering in hospital.
